Working News
Here at Chadzo we endeavour to promote the natural working ability of our dogs, mainly for the dogs own pleasure, but also if possible for us to participate in gundog working tests and to try and gain the Show Gundog Working Certificate. Our most successful dog up until 2011 in this field was Chadzo Secret Admirer J W ( Harry ), who, apart from achieving great success in the show ring gaining many awards including CC and Best of Breeds, also gained awards at Working Tests, qualified for his Show Gundog Working Certificate, and represented the Midland Golden Retriever Club at an Inter-Club Working Test. Ch Chadzo Accapella J W .... A short diary of Pella's training to gain the award of the *Show Gundog Working Certificate* is shown below.... July 2009.... Pella is currently being trained and attends a weekly local gundog training group consisting of mainly Flatcoat Retrievers, and another Golden Retriever known as ' Miss Bumble ', who tries her best to lead Pella into bad ways. This training is supplemented by several short sessions during the week to practice what we have learned. Pella has to date learned the basic obedience exercises of heel work, sit, stay and recall.
Pella in the sit stay. He can retrieve a dummy in the open and from cover, but is not quite sure about going in to the wet stuff yet. ( Mummy told him it might be cold ).

Pella in full flight over a ditch. September 2009. Dark nights have ended the weekly training classes but hopefully we may be able to meet up on Sunday mornings during the winter months to keep up the training. Pella has now decided it is more fun to pick up the dummy and then go and show it to all the other dogs instead of taking it back to Paul, so a lunge line has been purchased to put an end to this bright idea. April 2010 Training classes have resumed now nights are getting lighter. Now pushing on to Go Backs and short Un-seens. May 2010 This weeks class was more on steadiness. Pella really behaved himself. He also had Go Backs and 2 long retrieves. Whilst out for a walk the other day he retrieved a live Mouse. Don`t know where he found it but looks like he will retrieve Fur. After a short trip around the field in Pella`s mouth the mouse continued on its merry way unharmed. Just bought a new red Dummy whilst in Finland. It is slightly smaller than the normal ones and the dogs seem to really like it. June 2010 On a hot summer night training class we did retrieves from water. Pella wanted to do it but wasn`t sure. He eventually did some good retrieves from water up to his waist. Then we went for a weeks holiday in Cornwall with Pella, Scooby and Grace. It was very warm and Pella and Scooby just loved the sea. They were soon both swimming out into the waves to retrieve tennis balls and a dummy.

There were four tests and Pella did extremely well although not in the cards. Mr Mervyn Philpott of the Westley and Standerwick affix's later commented in Dog World Breed notes that " Show-bred Brodie`s Chadzo Accapella was working well when I saw him ", praise indeed from these influential working lines. Later in August we went on holiday in the Lake District which gave Pella and Grace much practice swimming and retrieving from water. November 2010.. The pressure is on now as Pella has just become Show Champion Chadzo Accapella JW, so he must now work hard to gain his Show Gundog Working Certificate so that the Show bit can be removed from his title and he becomes a full champion. December 2010. Thanks to some very kind friends I have now acquired a real pheasant ( Dead of course ) for Pella to practice with. I have taken him out and thrown it for him to retrieve and after initially sniffing it he picked it up and carried it nicely back to me. Still more to work on before his Show Gundog Working Certificate but its a good start. See photo below..
Pella continued his training during 2011 and thanks to Angie Cooper ( Dikeadaze) we were able to participate in *Picking Up* days to give Pella the experience and confidence of retrieving freshly shot game. THE BIG DAY !!! ... On the 16th December 2011 we went to the Ampton Shoot near Bury St Edmunds where the Eastern Counties Golden Retriever Club had organised a Show Gundog Working Certificate day. There were two A Panel judges and the dogs were tested as per Kennel Club regulations. They had to sit and stay off the lead whilst the guns were being fired, then hunt and retrieve a freshly shot bird, and also retrieve a bird or dummy from water. Pella passed all of these tests and was awarded his Show Gundog Working Certificate which now means he is a .... FULL CHAMPION !!!

January 2012 We have made a start with Harriet and Grace with basic sit, stays and short retrieves. When training classes begin again in the spring, firstly Harriet will be taken with the hope she will do as well as Pella.
